Disney Claims DeSantis Is Waging a “Relentless Campaign to Weaponize Government Power” — Here’s a Breakdown of the Drama

The ongoing battle between Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and The Walt Disney Company has reached a tipping point. What first began as apparent retaliation for Disney’s response to the Parental Rights in Education law (often criticized as the “Don’t Say Gay” law) rapidly spiraled into a hostile war between the state government and a massive company.

After outlining his plan of attack against Disney, DeSantis and his newly-appointed Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Board (formerly the Reedy Creek Improvement District) granted themselves “superior authority” and declared the previous Board’s agreements with Disney to be void. Disney swiftly responded by suing the governor and the entire District Board in federal court. That hasn’t seemed to dissuade DeSantis, though, and now it appears as though the war has only just begun.

DeSantis’ Office Releases Statement in Response to Lawsuit from Disney

Disney has escalated the fight being waged by Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

After Disney spoke out against the Parental Rights in Education law (often criticized as the “Don’t Say Gay” law), DeSantis and the Florida legislature removed the Disney-friendly Reedy Creek Improvement District Board, replacing the members with some hand-picked by the governor himself. Disney has decided to fight back by suing DeSantis and the new Board, and now, the governor’s office has responded.

Some Disney agreements have just been declared INVALID by the DeSantis-appointed Reedy Creek Improvement District Board and it could cause some big complications.

Disney entered into some important agreements with the old Board of Supervisors for the Reedy Creek Improvement District (now called the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District). These agreements gave Disney a lot of power over developments in the District for many years to come, despite what the new board may say or do. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and the new board have threatened a variety of actions against Disney and some of those are starting to take shape, and now we have a critical update.

Disney and DeSantis have been battling for quite some time now, following Disney’s statements against the Parental Rights in Education law (what critics call “Don’t Say Gay”). Following that, DeSantis and the Florida legislature have made some significant changes to Disney’s Reedy Creek Improvement District (now called the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District) including the imposition of a new board, declarations by the board that some recent Disney x Reedy Creek agreements are invalid, threats of a prison near Disney World, and more. And now Disney is “officially” fighting back.

Disney World Monorail Inspections Could CHANGE Per Gov. DeSantis’ Plans

If you thought the Reedy Creek Improvement District (now Central Florida Tourism Oversight District) battles were limited to legal issues over the agreements Disney entered into with the prior board of supervisors, you’d be wrong. The battle is reaching beyond that now.

Previously, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis had indicated that he wanted to change some things about Disney World and how safety inspections are done, specifically getting the government more involved when it comes to inspection regulations. We saw the new Board of Supervisors hear some arguments about inspections and Disney World pools recently as well. DeSantis had specifically pointed out the monorail as something he wanted the state to be able to inspect, and now we’re seeing DeSantis’ plan come together.
