We love going on cruises and obsessing over every little detail of the trip. From what food we’re going to eat, which excursions we’re going to try, and which activities we’re going to enjoy, there’s a lot to think about.
Right now, there’s a bit more planning going on because of the consistent norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships. Another cruise line has reported gastrointestinal illness onboard this month.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a Viking Cruise from April 11th to 23rd has reported 37 passengers and 5 crew members for being ill. There were a total of 355 passengers, with over 10% reporting that they had contracted the norovirus.
The outbreak was on the Viking Polaris, where the predominant symptoms were vomiting and diarrhea.
The ship took additional actions, such as isolating the sick members, increasing cleaning and disinfection procedures, and contacting the Vessel Sanitation Program to help limit the spread of the illness.
To help keep yourself safe on your upcoming cruise, remember to wash your hands thoroughly before and after eating and using the bathroom. Hand sanitizer doesn’t always help, so make sure you’re taking the time to fully wash your hands between activities.
If you’re heading on a Disney Cruise, it’s been revealed that the Disney Wish scored a perfect 100 on the CDC’s Sanitation Report. A score over 95 is deemed excellent, and a score less than 85 is not satisfactory. Here’s how each of the Disney Cruise ships scored:
- Disney Wish: 100
- Disney Dream: 99
- Disney Fantasy: 98
- Disney Magic: 96
- Disney Wonder: 96

We are currently on the Disney wonder in Ensenada Baja California and we disembark tomorrow. I developed a headache and vomiting 2 nights ago after filling my water bottle at the refill station on deck 10. My stomach ached for 2 days. My daughter drank from the same bottle the next morning and she’s had really bad diarrhea and a fever since yesterday evening. We called the med team and they wanted $400 from us to evaluate our daughter. We got off in Ensenada and got our daughter Motrin and a Pedialyte. We are self-isolating in our room til tomorrow. There are a lot of sick people onboard.
Always bring star anise on board. It kills norovirus. Make a tea with green tea and star anise – sweeten with honey (no fake sugars). You won’t throw up more than once and will rapidly get well.
