It’s the dawn of a new day for theme parks. With technology advancing and parks expanding, it’s no wonder many people are so interested in themed entertainment.
Universal’s brand-new theme park, Epic Universe, is about to open and is already getting rave reviews, and the company has also announced plans to build new theme parks in the United Kingdom and Frisco, Texas. But, Frisco isn’t the only city in Texas that might be getting a new theme park…
According to KTRK, a new study from the University of Houston revealed what sort of entertainment options residents want, and experts say it could entice investors to make it happen. In the past, Houston has had entertainment options like Astroworld, plus professional sports like the WNBA and hockey.
But, the new survey shows that Houston residents want those entertainment options to come back. It shows 57% want an NHL team, 60% want a Houston WNBA team, and the most popular response was that people wanted a theme park.
“Back when I was younger, we had Astroworld,” Miguel Garcia said. “Now that my kids are growing, I would like to see the same thing.”
“A large proportion, more than half, say they would go once a year,” Mark Jones, Rice University Baker Institute Fellow in Political Science, explained. “If you go down to parents with children under the age of 18, 40% said they would go twice a year, if not more.”
International Theme Park Services founder Dennis Spiegel says he’s not surprised by these results — and that they may cause investors to look a bit closer at Houston as a theme park destination. He says he knows of groups eyeing Houston right now.
“If you’re going to build one, you want to put it in the market that can facilitate and serve it, and Houston is one of those remaining markets,” Speigel said.
Of course, nothing has officially been planned or announced as of yet — but it does bode well for the theme park industry and its growth.
We’ve also previously reported that Universal was building a kids-oriented theme park in Frisco, Texas, so it sounds like Texas might be making waves when it comes to new theme park entertainment.
