Disneyland’s Downtown Disney District (say that fast!) is in the process of a total overhaul!
While many new stores and restaurants have already opened as part of this ongoing refurbishment, even more change is on the way as a new permit was filed to demolish a longstanding Downtown Disney building.
Earl of Sandwich is a Downtown Disney favorite, and it is genuinely a cockroach as it has survived multiple closure attempts. But don’t worry—this sandwich shop will still be around when the Downtown Disney transformation is complete.
As a quick history lesson, Earl of Sandwich used to be located between the AMC and the Disneyland Hotel. The AMC, along with the strip of stores that Earl of Sandwich was in, no longer exists. This area is now home to Din Tai Fung, a food court, some Disney stores, and a stage and seating area.
Earl of Sandwich then moved into the building that La Brea Bakery was once in. This location is still open and includes a sit-down restaurant. Earl of Sandwich knew that its days were numbered as Porto’s Bakery would eventually take over this coveted spot. In anticipation of this, Earl of Sandwich has a temporary mobile unit between the old ESPN Zone building at the Star Wars Trading Post. Both locations are currently open.
Well, it was recently announced that a construction permit for the demolition of the old La Brea Bakery building and two of the ticket booths near the entrance of Disney California Adventure has been officially filed.
Don’t worry; Earl of Sandwich will still be around at its temporary mobile location until the new two-story building is built. This new building will include a quick-service walk-up counter, a sit-down Earl of Sadwich Tavern, and an upstairs bar. It is scheduled to open later this year!
Even more new restaurants are coming to Disneyland’s shopping and dining district. Last year, Tortilla Joe’s closed to make way for two new restaurants: Arthur & Sons Steak and Bourbon and Pearl’s Roadside BBQ, which are currently under construction. Plus, even more work is being done as new stores like Lululemon are planned to occupy the former ESPN Zone.

So sad to read the La Brea Bakery is gone & even the building will go soon. Our little family ritual was to get breakfast (remember the caper berries?) before the parks opened & it was so nice! Also, their sandwiches (on their own, fresh bread) were no joke! Perfect road snack for the long drive home. ?
