It was just about two weeks ago that the U.S. Department of State issued a travel advisory for a popular cruise destination, and now there’s another one on the list.
If you’re traveling on a cruise in the coming months and you know that one of your stops happens to be in Spain, there’s a new travel advisory that’s very important for you to pay attention to before you travel. This new advisory is a level three, meaning it’s recommended that you reconsider traveling there.
According to the U.S. State Department, it updated its Level 3: Reconsider Travel advisory warning for Trinidad and Tobago, the headline reading, “Reconsider travel to Trinidad and Tobago due to serious risks from crime. There are also heightened risks of terrorism and kidnapping.”
This update comes as Trinidad and Tobago extends its state of emergency. Originally put into place on December 30th, 2024, due to “ongoing criminal activity that could threaten public safety,” the country’s parliament extended the state of emergency on January 13th, 2025, to now go through April 2025.
The warning went on to list that violence and shootings occur regularly throughout parts of the Port of Spain and that gang activity is also common. Additionally, and most dangerously for U.S. travelers, “Foreigners and a U.S. legal permanent resident have been recent victims of kidnapping.”
At this time, Disney Cruise Line does not have any itineraries that pass through Trinidad and Tobago, as the cruises mostly focus on heading to the Caribbean and The Bahamas. However, there are other cruise lines out there that do pass through the Port of Spain. If you’re on a cruise later this year that passes through this port, it’s best to exercise extreme caution, only stay in the cruise’s walled-off areas of the port, and only travel to excursions directly set up through your cruise line.
