2025 will most likely be remembered as the year of closures at Disney World.
It can feel like closure announcements are coming left and right, and while it may not be ideal this year, the good news is that these closures mean we will have more to look forward to and enjoy in the future! Disney just announced that another Disney World attraction will be joining the closure lineup, but we feel that Disney fans will be pleased with this refurbishment.
Not all Disney World rides and attractions are created equally, and Disney Adults make it clear when they are not fans of something. That is okay—it’s in our nature! Disney fans have been begging for Tomorrowland to get some extra love and care as it seems to be sadly fading into the land of yesterday rather than tomorrow.
While we would LOVE to see a Tomorroland overhaul happen, we don’t foresee it being announced anytime soon, as many parts of Magic Kingdom are under construction or will soon be under construction. The good news is that we think that this refurb announcement is a step in the right direction when it comes to improving Tomorrowland.
Disney announced that Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin will close for a lengthy refurbishment this August and reopen sometime next year. Both Test Track in EPCOT and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Magic Kingdom are undergoing lengthy refurbishments, so this news came as a shock, but we are not mad about it!
It can be challenging to take down the Evil Emperor Zurg when your blaster is attached to your ride vehicle, and it can feel impossible to hit the little Z targets. While we don’t love the timing of this closure, this refurbishment will bring about many changes to help improve the ride.
A New Scene
When the ride reopens next year, there will be a new scene with a new character! Buddy, the friendly robot, will help make sure riders are prepped by “enthusiastically encouraging final system checks on their Star Cruisers and a chance to hone their blaster aim.”
New Interactive Targets
While there are tons of tips and tricks to help you become a Galactic Hero on Space Ranger Spin, it can be tough to hit the targets. Disney seems to acknowledge this, as the Z targets will also receive an upgrade.

They will have new technology to react and light up when hit. To make it even easier to score points, the new blasters will be handheld, similar to the way they are in the Disneyland version at Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters! As if this news could not get any better, the blasters will have an “always-on-laster” that comes in two different colors per vehicle. We hope this means it will be much easier to see where you made your shot and help you aim better.
WOW! That is a lot of changes, but wait, THERE IS MORE! The ride vehicles will also be updated! Along with a new paint job inspired by Buzz, himself, and Star Command, the vehicles will feature a video monitor with real-time scoring updates.
While no exact opening date has been announced, when the ride opens next year, we have a feeling riders will be much better Space Rangers, as the ride update will make it easier to score points and move up in the ranks.

With all the closures taking place, maybe, Disney would be ahead of the game just to close permanently until All the rides are refurbished.
Agree, Mark! Tomorrowland Speedway is desperately in need of a major refurbishment too. We stopped riding Buzz Lightyear because it was so outdated. All of Tomorrowland should be shut down and given a major redo. Monsters Inc. needs to move to HS and the empty Tomorrowland Cafe and Stitch’s Great Escape could do something in tandem like the Incredibles.
