It may have just felt like a normal Tuesday to most of us, but Disney World decided February 18th was the day to announce some MASSIVE Disney news!
Disney just announced that as of February 25th, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in Magic Kingdom and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind in EPCOT will no longer require a Virtual Queue and will instead switch to a standby line. Some guests are excited about this change, but many others? Well, let’s just say they’re not happy.
This means that instead of having to wake up at 7 AM to grab a spot in the Virtual Queue or try again at 1 PM once you’re in EPCOT or Magic Kingdom, the ride will now switch to standby, meaning no one will need a Virtual Queue to ride.
However, many fans are upset about this for Cosmic Rewind simply because the demand for the ride is so large, they’re expecting for lines to be massive. When we shared the news on our Instagram, we were quickly flooded with comments from multiple readers with concerns. User @bradsdisney shared, “I don’t even think the [guardians] queue line will be big enough to contain the main queue!”
Many other readers stated that since EPCOT has TWO rides closed at the moment (Test Track, which won’t be open until this summer, and Gran Fiesta Tour, which is set to reopen in March) this is NOT a great decision. User @ztodd19photography shared, “That’s great, but these first couple years are gonna be some long lines. Because it’s clearly the best ride in Epcot. And with Test Track under construction, all ride traffic will be right there. They should’ve waited till Test Track was finished to make [the] flow of traffic easier.”
Comments from readers saying that they’re upset now they won’t be able to ride Cosmic Rewind on their trip are still coming in every few minutes, with users like @emimacc saying, “I’m so worried for [guardians!] I mean I would love to ride it a million times but don’t want to wait hours.” It’s true that this change will cause wait times to soar for this attraction, and many guests much rather prefer the Virtual Queue instead of standby lines.

I’m happy about this decision, for Guardians and Tiana. I hate virtual queues. If I rarely went to WDW, and spent a lot of money to go and then couldn’t get a VQ spot, I’d be furious. If I want to only ride Guardians over and over, and waiting in that line is how I wanted to spend my day, that should be my option . Love this decision!
I think it’s generally a good change. While I understand the desire to be able to pre-plan the ride time and have less of a wait, at least now people who really want to ride it can get in line and wait. At least there is that choice. With the virtual queue, if you didn’t get in, you didn’t get in, regardless of how long you might be willing to wait. I would expect that virtual queues are going to disappear in general, with DIsney now offering two different paid ways to skip the lines. I think that Disney is going to go increasingly to a ‘pay-or-wait’ model. Virtual queues *may* keep people out in the parks shopping and dining more, but they do not bring in any money direclty, and are no doubt costly to maintain on the back end.
Disney is only doing this to squeeze more money from their customers. They will jack up the price of the Guardians Lightning Lane pass and make sure they let 20-30 Lightning Lane holders on the ride to each standby customer. When people see the huge standby line, they will probably buy the Lightning Lane. It is no coincidence they are doing this while Test Teack is down.
Never ever had a problem getting a virtual queue spot. Just takes a little organisation and having the app on your phone. This decision will make for very long queues and lots of people opting for Lightning Lanes which is going to make Disney even more money. However I don’t suppose that figured in their thinking.
