Foolish Mortals, heed this warning before riding Disney World’s Haunted Mansion!
One of the most ICONIC rides in all of Disney World, Haunted Mansion over in Magic Kingdom offers riders plenty of scares, laughs, and a frighteningly good time. We LOVE this ride, but if you’ve never been, there are some warnings we need to deliver just so you’re fully prepared before visiting the 999 happy haunts.
Located in Liberty Square, Haunted Mansion has riders climb aboard a “Doom Buggy” for a grave journey through the haunted chambers of Magic Kingdom’s most famous haunted manor. The “spirited” tour has you accompanied by the disembodied voice of the Ghost as you journey through the cadaverous realm of the supernatural.
While riding, you’ll “glide past a casket-filled conservatory, Madame Leota’s chilling séance room and a ghostly graveyard of singing specters as you attempt to find your way out. Beware of hitchhikers—these phantom pranksters may follow you home.”
Now, it has to be said: this ride really leans into comedy, making it a total joy to ride. BUT it’s not without its scares.
This dark ride is just that — A DARK RIDE! Most of the scenes in this ride are fairly dark and lack bright lighting, which adds to the ambiance. Small ones afraid of the dark could struggle with this feature.
There are also a few jump scares. They aren’t plentiful and they don’t hide themselves with a ton of finesse so you can expect them if you can keep an eye out, but they do exist. Kids who aren’t used to even the mildest of horror could get pretty scared by this.
Per the official Disney World Website, “The Haunted Mansion is dark and contains some mildly frightening scenes, but there is no gore, the ghostly residents are friendly and the ride is slow-moving.”
At the end of the day, this is still very much a family ride and it wants to make you smile way more than it wants scream. Packed with tons of humor, Easter Eggs, and charm, the Haunted Mansion is a great intro into all things spooky for kids (and parents) who are ok with some super mild (emphasis on mild) scares.

For years my two girls were intimidated by the Haunted Mansion, even into their late teens! Now in their late 20s, they enjoy it and laugh about it, but do often recount those early heebie jeebies!!
When I was young, the grave heads popped up randomly and quickly. Scared the heck out of me! They don’t do that now. Kind of dumbed it down. Sad. That was really cool and scary.
Our first trip back in 2009, I wanted to take my son on it. We got to the line and almost as soon as we got to the door he decided he didn’t want to go. I finally went on it years later and it wasn’t what I was expecting. It was better! My wife doesn’t like things like HM but she’ll go because I go. Our 11 year old son won’t go but our 8 year old daughter loves going on it with me. It’s one of our favorite rides and we even listen to the HM story on Alexa sometimes.
