It’s been a whirlwind 24 hours as the U.S. has been dealing with the ban of social media platform TikTok.
Now that the ban has been put in place (U.S. TikTok users now get a message on their app stating that it’s banned in their country), we’re starting to see the far-reaching consequences of the ban. Not only did TikTok get banned, but so did ByteDance’s other apps, CapCut and Lemon8. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, a Marvel digital game, Marvel Snap, also got banned.
UPDATE: Marvel Snap is back online following the pause of the TikTok ban.
Yes, a digital game using a licensed Disney property, Marvel, has now been banned from the U.S. because of its link to TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance. Although the digital game was developed by an American development company, Second Dinner Studios, its publisher is Nuverse, a company that is owned by ByteDance. As a result, Marvel Snap is now unavailable to U.S. users. Even trying to access the Marvel Snap website from the U.S. results in the following message: “Currently not available in your country or region.”
Second Dinner Studios released a statement concerning the ban, stating, “Unfortunately, Marvel Snap is temporarily unavailable in U.S. app stores and is unavailable to play in the U.S. This outage is a surprise to us and wasn’t planned. Marvel Snap isn’t going anywhere. We’re actively working on getting the game up as soon as possible and will update you once we have more to share.”
Marvel Snap is a digital collectible card game that features a collection of characters from the Marvel Universe, including Spider-Man, Blade, the X-Men, Devil Dinosaur, Hulk, and many more. The game has received critical acclaim and multiple awards. However, for now, it’s banned in the U.S.
Disney licenses its content to game developers, but this ban is unlikely to affect Disney’s bottom line. However, fans of the game are already affected, and it’s unclear what will happen next.
We’ll be keeping an eye on the situation, so stay tuned to DFB for more.

That’s why I never play games that are available through only one platform. Even if the game is available, e.g. on Steam, I always check if I can download it from another source (even from the manufacturer). I understand the bitterness of players who spent a lot of time playing and achieving and suddenly it all came crashing down. I play other card games – hearthstone and legends of elysium, which look safe in their position. Despite everything, I feel sorry for them.
