A long-awaited feature is FINALLY at Galaxy’s Edge.
Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
When Disney first announced the massive Star Wars lands that would come to be known as Galaxy’s Edge, the company promised a slew of interactive features that would help the lands completely immerse visitors inside the Star Wars galaxy. Unfortunately, and much to fans dismay, many of them weren’t present when the lands first opened. However, slowly but surely some of these elements are being integrated into Galaxy’s Edge, including one we saw just this weekend.
This past weekend, we came upon a “play test” of two free roaming droids at Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland. The droids had made their debut to much fanfare late last year, and now they’ve returned!
The droids we’re looking for.
Disney released the first video of them on social media back in November of 2023. In the clips, the droids can be seen roaming the land, and interacting with their surroundings, including even getting angry.

At the time, associate lab director at Disney Research Moritz Bächer said of the droids, “The robots actually learn to imitate artistic motion — that’s the secret sauce to make them work so quickly. They can actually emote and learn to dance… They can get really angry and the eyes turn red. They walk over uneven terrain. They can still balance. They’re really robust.”
Disney Imagineer Joel Peavy added that the droids were in “play test” mode, but that Imagineering was “really excited to see the guests’ reaction” and “where it might go in the future.”
Adorable Droids
Droids navigating the land “on their own” had long been a promised a feature of Galaxy’s Edge, and we loved seeing that come to fruition in the form of these adorable droids. Hopefully they stick around for a long, long time in the galaxy far far aw… er close to home. Stay tuned to DFB for more Galaxy’s Edge news.

We saw these Droids yesterday at Disneyland. Completely blown away. It seemed that the guests were so enchanted with them that the fact they were walking ON TWO FEET was lost on many. Easy enough to do, they are fascinating to watch. I think it took Boston Robatics a few years to develop robots that could walk on two feet. Nice job lab guys.
