What do you do in Disney World when your favorite ride is closed?
It happens often (especially if that ride is Rise of the Resistance in Hollywood Studios or, most recently, Pirates of the Caribbean in Magic Kingdom). Well, today, one of Disney World’s classic rides is having a rough week and is currently closed.
Earlier this week, on September 6th, Space Mountain was closed for quite a while. At the time, we received a notification on the My Disney Experience app notifying us of the closure.

We walked by Space Mountain a few hours later to see that it was still down. It looked like it might be that way for a while, too, as Cast Members had put out alternative entertainment in the form of Corn Hole.
Then, we went back to Tomorrowland in Magic Kingdom to check on Space Mountain AGAIN on September 7th. Guess what? Space Mountain was closed again.
Well, fast forward to today, September 8th, and Space Mountain did not open with the park and was still closed well after Magic Kingdom opened. Cast Members did not have an ETA on when it would reopen but confirmed that the ride was down for technical issues. We were assured that other Cast Members were inside trying to fix things, but we didn’t notice any cars being tested.
So we decided to get on the PeopleMover to get a better look at the situation — the PeopleMover goes THROUGH Space Mountain. We got a good view of Space Mountain with the lights on, which is actually pretty cool, although we’re still sad that the ride is still down.
We’re on the PeopleMover and Space Mountain is down ? Sad for those wanting to go to Space Mountain, but kinda the jackpot for us to get to see this? LOL! pic.twitter.com/zGuhcPR02z

However, by 1:30PM EST, Space Mountain was back up and running with a 30-minute wait time. We hope that whatever issue it’s been having this week has been fixed.

They need to do a complete revamp or at least a major refurbishment of Space Mountain. I used to love the ride, but now it’s uncomfortable and rickety. Most of all they need to create a handicapped accessible entrance. Even though I remember riding my ECV into the line in the past, it wasn’t allowed this time and the wheelchairs provided were too narrow for me. I walked with my cane, but it was so far to the ride and back, I was literally crying in pain by the time I got through. It was particularly frustrating because there was hardly any line, but there’s no way they can make the line shorter once you’re inside the building. Magic Kingdom WAS built 50 years ago and much of it’s infrastructure is starting to show it’s age.
Oh my goodness I was finally at Disney at the same time as you are! I wish I would have seen you?
We saw that space mountain was down as well but it was back up and running during the Halloween party on Friday night. However, the lighting was different than during the party on Monday. On Monday all the lights were out. On Friday they had a big white light shining at the top of the ride so it wasn’t totally in the dark during some parts.
