A lot has been changing recently for Disney Vacation Club (DVC) members. Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort just opened new DVC Resort Studios and updated their existing DVC villas. And a whole new building is coming to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort that’s going to have even more DVC villas! But a major change just took effect recently that DVC members will want to know about.
The Disney Vacation Club is sort of like a timeshare in Disney World. Members buy into a point system and then use those points to “pay” for certain Disney World hotel rooms. Recently, the DVC adjusted a policy for that point system.
DVC members are given a certain number of points each year (depending on their membership) to spend at select Disney hotels. But they can also “bank” unused points to use the following year or borrow points from the next year to use earlier. That can be helpful if you won’t be visiting Disney World for one year or if you want to pay for a more expensive hotel than you can afford with one year’s worth of points.
When Disney World reopened in 2020, the policy for borrowing future points had changed: members could only borrow 50% of their available points from the upcoming year. But now the policy has changed back, and members can once again borrow 100% of points from the upcoming year!
Disney sent a notice to DVC members announcing the return of the previous policy. This change went into effect on July 12th, 2022. So now if you’re hoping to pay for an upcoming hotel stay with DVC points, you can once again use 100% of your points from the upcoming year.
Not all Disney World hotels have DVC rooms — some that do include the Grand Floridian, Polynesian Village Resort, Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts, Disney’s BoardWalk Inn, and others. The new Star Wars hotel, Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, also accepts DVC points for guests hoping to stay there. But you may need to borrow some future points for that experience — it doesn’t come cheap!
Remember that the DVC-exclusive Top of the World lounge at Disney’s Contemporary Resort recently reopened with a new Disney villain theme! The updated spot has new eats and drinks with sinister names.

No doubt, DVC is moving upscale with its pricing, and now the vacation every other year or two vs. every year is falling more into the norm..
Hi Gigi. My family of 10 including our 8 month old Great Grandson just enjoyed an 8 day vacation at the Port Orleans Hotel. It was wonderful. We missed the 1900 Restaurant. We have booked a return visit next June 2023. Can you tell me if the 1900 Restaurant in the Grand Floridian will be open by June 2023. Thanks.
A solution to a problem I suspect most of us don’t have.
Seriously, more borrowing? After park closures, I suspect most DVC members are “point rich” like me and are trying to use up what they have!
As always, “local” DVC members are probably an exception.
Hi Ron, I’m so happy to hear you and your family had a great time. At this time, Disney has not released any information on when 1900 Park Fare will reopen so I am unable to provide that information, unfortunately. We will definitely post an article as soon as we hear anything.
This is one of my bucket list items…to become a DVC member before I die! Ha! It will probably happen the day before I die! Lol!
Hi Gigi. During our visit to Disney World last month, I noticed something disturbing. In 1991 my wife and I bought a FAMILY STONE for us and our two daughters. It was outside the entrance to The Magic Kingdom. (MAKING MEMORIES). All of the family stones ARE GONE. Disney did not tell us they were doing this and certainly did not compensate us for THE LOST MEMORIES. Three generations of our family have seen our stone each visit to Disney World. This year we wanted to show our family stone to our Great Grandson, the fourth generation. Gigi, why was this done by Disney and why were we not told about it in advance?
Hi Ron. In March of 2019 Disney announced on their website that the bricks would be retired. They stated that when they were originally sold the commitment they made was that the bricks would be there until 2011. When they were removed, there was no way to save individual bricks to give back to the people that had purchased them because they weren’t designed to be pulled up one by one. You can read more about that here.
Hello! I love DFB. You all are my daily Disney fix!
Anyways, we have been DVC members for almost 15 years and this year I have had a very difficult time making reservations. I’ve tried 3 times this year and have been unsuccessful. Granted it’s been about 3 months out vs. 7 or 11 months but I haven’t been able to get a DVC room or a hotel room using DVC points. Have you all heard of anyone else having a difficulties? It just seemed strange. Over the years I haven’t always been able to get a DVC room but I could always get a hotel room. I thought you all might have some background info. Thanks!!
