Staffing issues have been impacting a lot of different industries, including travel and tourism.

We’ve seen staffing shortages impact Disney over the past several months, but there are also shortages in places like the airline industry, which has caused many flights to be canceled. Another industry feeling major impacts is the hospitality industry — hotels in particular, according to a new survey.
A recent survey by the American Hotel and Lodging Association showed that 97% of the hotels surveyed said they are experiencing a staffing shortage, according to Spectrum News 13.
Grand Floridian Hotel & Spa
There are over 130,000 open positions in the hotel industry nationwide and 50% of those jobs are for housekeepers, making it the number one position in need.
Room at Disneyland Hotel
This could have to do with the fact that independent cleaners can earn about 5 times more an hour than a hotel housekeeper, according to Spectrum News 13. Hotels are now outsourcing cleaning service to independent contractors, as hotels continue to be booked and they need to get the rooms ready.
Old Key West Resort
Disney hotels have been dealing with staffing issues as well, with Disney CEO Bob Chapek saying in early 2022 that hospitality has been a main area of difficulty.
All-Star Movies Front Desk
Housekeeping services at Disney World have been reduced since the global pandemic began in 2020. Right now, your room is cleaned before you arrive, but during your stay you will only receive light housekeeping service every other day (unless you choose to decline the service). It’s even less for Disney Vacation Club Members, who get service on the 4th and 8th days of their trip. And, we’ve found that the level of housekeeping has varied between different Disney World hotels.

The housekeeping situation at Disney World could be due to staffing shortages and/or health and safety protocols. But, it appears that Disney hotels are not alone when it comes to shortages, as shown by the survey of other hotels.
