Right now, Disney World’s most popular ride is Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance!
The newer Star Wars attraction is located in Galaxy’s Edge and is so popular that Disney uses a boarding group system to load guests. It can be pretty difficult to snag a boarding group when the parks are busy, and now the process has changed again!
Previously, guests attempting to secure a boarding group through the My Disney Experience app were met with a “Create Your Party” screen after trying to join a group. Here, you would choose who you wanted to get a boarding group for and who you didn’t. We often encouraged our readers to just move right through this screen and not double-check it so that they didn’t waste time. (Seriously, boarding groups can be gone in SECONDS.)
But now, there has been a small change. Guests will click “Join Virtual Queue” as normal…
…but then they’ll be met with a new “Review Details” screen! Disney will auto-select your party for you, and you’ll have the option to change it if you need to. To do that, make sure to click on the “Change Party” button next to the list of current party members. You may not want to do this at that time because it could slow you down.
Once your group is secured, you can double-check your party to make sure everything is in order. If you have too many people in your party, you should be able to remove them. And if you encounter any problems, try checking with Guest Relations and they may be able to help. We’ll test this out soon and let you know how it goes!

Have you ever gotten a boarding group for Rise of the Resistance? Let us know in the comments!
How many people is TOO MANY people? We have a party of 14 and I’ve been trying to find the answer to this for some time!
Luckily we were able to get a boarding pass both times we visited Hollywood Studios.
I’m confused. If I join the virtual queue, don’t I have to add the rest of my family to the party? If I skip the step of adding people to my party, doesn’t that put only me in the virtual queue?
Chris, the others in your group should automatically be added to the queue with you so long as they are already loaded in your My Disney Experience account. If they’re not and you don’t add them, you can go to Guest Relations to have them added.
I have been to Disneyworld 3 times since RotR opened. Still haven’t been able to get a pass. Maybe in 3-4yrs I’ll actually see what the fuss is about. ?
Karla, our understanding is that it does not matter how many people you have in your group.
Thanks, Sarah! The article above referenced removing people from your group if you have too many. So I wasn’t sure if there was a cutoff or a number that was optimal. I appreciate the info!
We were recently there. Couldn’t get in the virtual queue at 7:00 a.m. Got a tip from a DVC cast member! Within the park, at 1 p.m., be on the site for the virtual queue, but turn your WiFi OFF. Use your data on your phone. As soon as your phone shows 1:00 p.m., refresh the screen and you should be able to join the queue. Worked for us and so worth it! What a cool ride!
Rise wasn’t open yet when we went in 2019. We are going at the beginning of October and I will be trying to get a boarding pass for my son and I. I know the queue opens at 7am and 1pm. My question is when it opens at 7am are you able to chose an afternoon time you want to go or do you have to wait until the 1pm open timeframe to try to grab an afternoon slot?
Karen, when it comes to Rise Boarding Passes, if you get one you’ll be assigned a Boarding Group, and you’ll have to ride when your Boarding Group is called (via notifications on your phone). Whether that is morning or afternoon depends on a few factors, primarily which Boarding Group are you in (the lower the number, the sooner you’ll ride) and whether the ride has any delays that day. So unfortunately you can’t predict when you’ll ride for sure.
I tried to sign up this morning but it said I was ineligible? I had a park pass
